KITSON LOW (INTEGRITY 2-2)- YOUNGEST VOLUNTEER AT OBS CAMP FOR YOUTHS WITH INTELLECTUAL & PHYSICAL DISABILITIES

Kitson Low rendered his help during the recent March Holidays, from Wednesday to Friday (20-22 March 2013), as the youngest volunteer at Outward Bound Singapore camp for youths with intellectual and physical disabilities.

When Kitson’s  mum told him about such a volunteer act, he decided to help as he felt that he could make a difference in someone’s life and give them the attention that they need. He wanted to take part in such volunteer acts first so that he can inform his fellow classmates about his experience and influence them in attending any future camps with him.

He was in charge of taking care of two students who were 10 years old and 16 years old. During an excursion to Pulai Ubin, Kitson had to help them get used to the new environment and make new friends. He patiently tried to get the students to communicate with him and share their thoughts.

After the camp, Kitson learnt that those with special needs are just as similar in thoughts as him and all they needed was some special attention. He is glad that he participated in the camp and would want to take part in such volunteer acts again as it was an enriching experience for him. (Read more)

Kelvin Chua (Hope 3-1) receives Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) Youth Aspiration Award

The SPD Youth Aspiration Award aims to inspire talented youths with physical disabilities to pursue their interests outside of the academic arena. The award provides a grant of up to $5,000 per recipient to be used in the year to develop a talent, and covered such expenses as training sessions and equipment purchase.  It is  offered to students from secondary to university levels who  wish to further their interests/talents in visual and performing arts, sports and community service.

Due to cancer, Kelvin had his left leg amputated when he was seven years old. At nine years old, he underwent surgery to remove a portion of his lungs due to cancer relapse. He now has a prosthetic limb to help him walk. Despite his disability, he was persuaded to attend Secondary Two level camp in February 2012, and he participated in most of the activities. He is also an active member of the Table Tennis Club, and hopes to one day be on the school’s team. Kelvin is a good natured boy and has resilience. There was once when someone made fun of him and the teacher reprimanded the classmate, but Kelvin brushed it off and was not upset. Highly responsible, he discharged his duties as the class's Vice Chairperson diligently and responsibly. Kelvin is definitely a good role model for Navalites and a most deserving recipient of the 2012 Edusave CHaracter Award (ECHA)... (Read more)

From Captain's Deck (Principal's Messages)

We Care

2012 has been another memorable and positive year for Navalites and the school community. We had decided on the school theme WE CARE which became a weaving thread that provided coherent focus for the school’s work in the course of the year. The values-based theme functioned as an anchoring reminder of what was important & significant as we went about our daily school activities in the past year. A year-theme enabled our school’s values, mission & vision to be expressed in a refreshing way and would entrench the culture of character building in NBSS. We are therefore glad that a survey of graduating Navalites in September indicated that three-quarters of them felt that the theme WE CARE had guided them in their actions ......

AN INSPIRATION TO NAVALITES

Mr Adam Ng Kok Seng
NBSS Alumnus (Class of 1997)
Associate Director, Portfolio Management
Temasek International Pte Ltd
Guest of Honour for Graduation Day 2012
10 October 2012

Mr Adam Ng is a good example to all Navalites that being in the Normal Academic course.is no barrier to life success. He obtained his O levels in NBSS, took the ‘A’ levels at ACJC, and graduated with a Bachelor of Accountancy (Honours) from the Nanyang Technological University. Starting his career as an accountant with Shell Eastern Petroleum Pte Ltd, he is now responsible for managing $21 billion value creation opportunities in the Temasek portfolio companies. Wanting to contribute to his alma mater, he has joined the NBSS Alumni Association as well as the School Advisory Committee. He is indeed a role model of the Caring Citizen Future Leader.

The team’s winning entry, Aspirations,  is interpreted as follows:

With hope, optimism and courageous action, we can determine what is to be.

But the exact form of the future remains intangible, somewhat like shadows which entice us with intriguing silhouettes but take no concrete forms.

There could be infinite possibilities, represented metaphorically by the myriad forms of ceramic trees.

We congratulate our Sepaktakraw team for sustaining their achievements!

Our Community

This is a mammoth 38-metre wall installation by Navalites, Staff, School Advisory Committee and Partners (Parents, Alumni, Residents of Nee Soon South Constituency and Well-Wishers). It is the epitome of our creativity, collaboration, harmony and joy in art creation. Installed on the long wall between the school gates, this ceramic mural is also an expression of our strong belief that art is for everyone to appreciate and inspire – hence our desire to spread our love and passion with our Yishun community.

Enthused by Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night and Antonio Gaudi’s mosaic art, Our Community incorporates the rich physical and natural landscape of Yishun – Skyline during the day and night, HDB blocks, flora and fauna. Mr Yew San Ho, Vice-Chairman of the School Advisory Committee, sponsored cement for the installation.

Er Dr Lee Bee Wah, Advisor to Nee Soon South Grassroots Organisations and special guest for our Art & Food Fair 2012, unveiled Our Community on Saturday 30 June 2012. The art piece is a work in progress and there will be more delightful additions in the coming weeks.

 Art and Food Fair 2012

Held in conjunction with Achievement Day 2012 on Saturday 30 June 2012, the fair seeks to deepen character and citizenship education through providing more opportunities for Navalites to demonstrate care for the community. Secondary 1, 2 and 3 classes set up art and craft, food as well as games stalls to raise $15,288 for the Nee Soon South Community Development and Welfare Fund which supports the needy residents of the constituency. Parents also supported by setting up a jumble sale stall.

Basketball North Zone ‘B’ Division Competition

Our Basketball ‘B’ division boys and girls took part in the Basketball North Zone Competition and gained immense exposure and experience through the experience. Our boys and girls did us proud, especially our boys, who advanced to the second round of the competition – a feat that has the school last saw many years ago. This is despite the North Zone being extremely challenging this year, with 4 North Zone teams qualifying for the Nationals.

With a team strengthened by the vigour of the North Zone competition, our teams then took part in the North Zone Second Tier Competition. With a spirit demonstrating ‘Stout Hearts, Brave Deeds’, our Navalite basketballers overcame many stronger and more experienced teams. Our girls came in at 4th position among 7 teams and our boys emerged 4th out of 15 teams.

Students’ service learning programmes during level camps

Our Secondary 1 Navalites participated in an anti-littering campaign to spread an important message to the public─ that all of us are responsible for keeping our environment clean. They created bookmarks with anti-littering messages and went around the neighbourhood to share the message with the public. Our Navalites are very grateful for the opportunity to play their part in keeping the environment clean and it was exciting for them to meet curious onlookers and engage them in conversations to share the importance of keeping our environment clean.

Our Secondary 3 Navalites headed to Bintan for their exciting 4 days and 3 nights camp. While on their trip, they did not forget about giving back to the community. They helped to pave roads, plant trees and painted the walls of a school for the children at Bintan... (Read more)
